They say losing weight is simple. Just eat less.
And they are right. If you eat less you will lose weight for sure. And it’s actually easier than not eating. You just sit there. You don’t even have to go and get food.
But we all know it’s not that easy. If it was we’d all be thin and no one would binge eat. And you wouldn’t be here. But 97% of diets don’t work, so here we are.
I actually don’t even really care about weight. The truth is you can be happy fat and you can be happy thin. Weight and bingeing are a by-product of a bigger problem that’s a problem worth solving.
That problem of feeling out of control around food. Feeling powerless in our own lives. Feeling powerless to control and care for our own bodies.
This is the problem you can solve that is actually worth solving.
But you have to solve it where it actually takes place which isn’t with food. You can change what you eat temporarily and this will not solve the problem. That's why diets work for a short time but fail in the long run.
If you change why and how you eat as well as what you will solve the problem for good. You can also solve a lot of other problems the same way. I’ve just picked this manifestation of the problem because it’s so pressing for so many people.
As a veteran marketer I can see all over consumption problems come from the same drive.
Trying to manage feelings with consumption.
All effective marketing of products these days offers emotional benefits. So we consume as a way to manage our feelings. Chocolate is marketed as offering a 'break', coffee offers 'indulgence', 'connection', 'escape'. The list goes on.
If you learn to manage your feelings without resorting to overeating, over drinking, over watching, over social media-ing and just generally over consuming you will get your life back. Promise.
The first part of any solution is defining the problem. The problem is being able to manage your emotions and urges.
If that’s the problem then the solution becomes simple.
If you are willing to sit with an emotion and create a gap between your urges and actions you will learn to manage emotions so that you will never be at the mercy of overeating and bingeing again. You will also not be at the mercy of over drinking or spending using the same method.
If you can learn to sit at a desk and work for 8 hours straight you can learn to do this. If you can learn to meditate, you can do this. If you can learn to run for 30 mins non stop you can do this. It’s as simple as being willing to retrain your brain. For a while it’s uncomfortable but then it’s easy.
Don’t start another diet. Work on your mind and solve your problem for good.
